All the work that we do at Vellum is designed specifically for our clients or are custom artworks created by the tattooist. As each unique artwork needs to be crafted individually, the design work itself can be a complex process and often takes much longer than the time required to tattoo it. For this reason your deposit is non-refundable.
For multi-session tattoos, the deposit will be held as payment towards the last session of the tattoo. A deposit will also be forfeited in full in the case of:

Design Process
On average it takes 2.5 times longer to design a tattoo than it takes to tattoo it. So if your tattooist says the tattoo will take about 1 hour to tattoo then they will spend about 3 hours designing it and another three hours in the studio with you. If they quote one day’s work then they will generally spend about 5 hours designing it and 7 – 8 hours in the studio with you on the day (5 -6 hours of “tattoo” time equates to about 13 hours of real time for your artist). This is a very rough estimate and some designs can take a lot longer – up to 20 or 30 hours.
For this reason we ask our tattooists to try to get large designs to you about 1 week before your appointment. This will give you enough time to make any changes you may want and it also takes into account all of the other designs that your tattooist will have to draw before your appointment.
Please be thoughtful if your artist is struggling to meet this deadline – there will be a number of other designs they are also working through at any given point.
Whilst we are all happy to make changes to your design to ensure that it is exactly what you want, please be aware that a drawing will never look exactly like a tattoo and sometimes changes (such as size and colour) will need to be made on the day. If you choose to completely change your design ideas or style your tattooist may need to reschedule your appointment.

Billing PolicyYour artist will provide you with a quote for the original design size in advance based upon the information that they collect at the consultation. However, if you request a different size or other alterations after the consultation, the price will vary accordingly.
The final price will be agreed on the day of the tattoo appointment once all these decisions have been finalised and before tattooing has begun. If the work is to be completed over multiple sessions the artist may choose to charge you at an agreed upon Day or Half Day Rate to be paid by yourself pro rata per session. The pricing of your tattoo is entirely at your Artist’s discretion as all artists at Vellum Tattoo are self-employed. In this instance the artist will usually give an indication quote at the beginning of how long they think it is likely to take. For tattoos booked on a full day rate you can expect to receive 6 hours of your tattooist’s time for all tattooing and tattooing related services. A typical full day session usually starts at about 10am and will often not finish until about 5pm. Services include, but are not limited to:
